Luna Lovegood Character Bio

Luna Lovegood, now Luna Scamander, was a witch and the only child of Pandora and Xenophilius Lovegood. Her mother accidentally died when she was nine years old, leaving her under the care of her father, editor of The Quibbler. They live in Ottery St Catchpole located in Devon. Luna Lovegood attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during which time she was sorted into Ravenclaw. She became the only non-Gryffindor close friend of Harry Potter when she joined Dumbledore’s Army. She participated in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, after which she helped revive Dumbledore’s Army when Lord Voldemort took control and placed Severus Snape as Hogwarts Headmaster. After that, she survived the Battle of Hogwarts, displaying her great magical ability.

When Lord Voldemort took control, Luna Lovegood was abducted by Death Eaters and imprisoned in the Malfoy Manor dungeon for months alongside other characters like Dean, also from Hogwarts. Her imprisonment was in direct response to her father publishing pro-Harry Potter content in his magazine. In the spring of 1998, she was freed by Dobby, after which point she recovered at Shell Cottage before returning to Hogwarts for the final battle.

After her time at Hogwarts, she became a magizoologist, classifying new species of magical animals. She married the grandson of Newt Scamander, Rolf Scamander, also an accomplished magizoologist and together they had two twins. She remained close friends with Ginny Potter in Harry Potter who named their third daughter after her.

Luna Lovegood Birthplace

Luna Lovegood was born in Great Britain. She lived in Ottery St Catchpole located in Devon.

Luna Lovegood Parents

Luna Lovegood was born on the 13th of February, 1981 as the only child of Pandora and Xenophilius Lovegood. She is presented as very well loved and taken care of in the books in spite of the fact that her mother Pandora was accidentally killed in front of her when she was nine years old experimenting with spells. Nonetheless Luna Lovegood states that her mother was a gifted witch in spite of these accidents. After that point Luna was raised by xenophilius alone.

Luna Lovegood Physical Traits

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, chapter 10, we meet Luna Lovegood who is described as having “straggly, waist-length, dirty blond hair, very pale eyebrows, and protruding eyes that gave her a permanently surprised look.

Luna Lovegood is known for her unique sense of fashion, regularly wearing things that people make fun of, like butterbeer cork necklaces, dirigible Plum earrings, and spectrespecs. She likes to sleep with shoes on because she regularly sleepwalks, but she also doesn’t wear shoes in the movies because other students in her house take her shoes and hide them.

She likes to store her wand behind her left ear and always seems dreamy and distracted. When she attends the Quidditch matches during her time at Hogwarts, she appears to support Gryffindor every time they play Hufflepuff or Slytherin, wearing a hat with a lion head on top which roars, or when supporting Ravenclaw, wearing an eagle hat that has wings which flap.

She wore bright yellow robes to Fleur Delacour and Bill Weasley’s wedding because she believed that you were supposed to wear sun colors to a wedding. At Slughorn’s Christmas party in 1996, she wore silver robes and, despite her odd appearance, was always described as somewhat pretty.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter noted, “Luna was once again demonstrating her usual knack of speaking of uncomfortable truths; he had never met anyone quite like her.”

Luna Lovegood Early Life

Not much is known about her early life other than being very well-loved, a family trait that continued even after her mother passed away. Her mother was a gifted witch who regularly experimented, and when Luna was nine years old, her mother died in front of her as a direct result of one of these experiments. Because of witnessing this death, she can see thestrals, the magical horses that pull the carriages at Hogwarts for all but the first years.

She and her father regularly take holidays in Sweden searching for the crumple-horned snorkack and trying to rebuild Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem, which is said to increase the wearer’s creativity and magical abilities. She regularly fishes for plumpies from the local river, gross things like dirigible plums, and brews healthy tea at home made from gurdyroots.

Luna Lovegood Hogwarts Years

Luna Lovegood Hogwarts

Luna Lovegood’s time at Hogwarts spans from 1992 until 1998. She is one year behind Harry Potter in the same class as Ginny Weasley, with whom she is friends. In her fourth year, she meets Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and Neville Longbottom on the Hogwarts Express. Ginny Weasley introduces them after Neville Longbottom is hesitant to share her cart because he doesn’t want to intrude.

This is the same year when no one believes Harry Potter when he says that Lord Voldemort is back. However, Luna Lovegood believes him, which she makes known while reading a magazine upside down. She joins Dumbledore’s Army, a defense against the dark arts group led by Harry Potter as the year continues. She works hard and arranges for Rita Skeeter to interview Harry Potter at the Three Broomsticks, where he can give his complete account of Lord Voldemort’s return during the Triwizard Tournament. She has also convinced her father to publish the full interview in his magazine. After an educational decree from the ministry of magic said no one was allowed to read it, every copy sold out.

Luna and Ginny stand guard during that same year, turning students away while Harry Potter tries to contact Sirius Black to confirm whether Lord Voldemort is torturing him. After escaping the inquisitorial Squad with a series of jinxes and hexes, they meet up with Harry Potter. Luna reminds him they can get to the ministry of magic to rescue Sirius Black using thestrals. After being caught by Professor Umbridge, Luna is the only character not to fight against her restraints and look bored. She sits side-saddle on her thestral with no problems whatsoever, juxtaposed by everyone else who struggles and finds the experience horrifying.

After that, Luna participated in the battle at the department of mysteries. She hears voices from behind the veil, confirming that they are the voices of those who have passed before. She protected Ron after he was hit with a spell, cursed the Death Eater who tried to seize Ginny and guided Ron and Ginny through the department of mysteries. Luna made it the longest but was eventually stunned by a Death Eater. However, she survived the battle.

That same year back at Hogwarts, she provided Harry Potter with Comfort after the death of his Godfather Sirius Black, reminding him that the voices behind the veil are those of our loved ones and he would meet his Godfather one day just the same as she would be reunited with her mother one day.

Thanks mainly to the successful sell out of The Quibbler after Harry Potter’s interview with Rita Skeeter, Luina was able to spend the summer on holiday with her father.

On the Hogwarts Express, Luna Lovegood can see Harry Potter under his invisibility cloak in the film version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. She can see him under his invisibility cloak even though his invisibility cloak is one of the three Deathly Hallows that can hide the wearer from anyone, including death.

During her fifth year at Hogwarts, when Romilda Vane tried to convince Harry Potter to come to sit with her group and not with Neville Longbottom and Luna Lovegood, Luna noted that people expected Harry to have cooler friends. Still, Harry reminded her that she and Neville were the coolest because they fought at the department of mysteries.

Near Christmas, Luna comforted Hermione when she cried in the bathroom after Ron Weasley mocked her and Transfiguration. It was there that Harry asked Luna to accompany her to Professor Slughorn’s Christmas party. At the Christmas party, she discussed the far-fetched conspiracies printed in her father’s magazine with such sincerity that Harry Potter had need coming out of his nose. The same year Luna Lovegood became the commentator for Quidditch, talking about interestingly shaped clouds and how Zacharias Smith wasn’t performing well.

At the end of the year, when Death Eaters attacked the castle, Luna Lovegood was one of the few members of Dumbledore’s Army to respond to the attack. Therefore she participated in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower. She had initially asked to watch over Professor Snape’s office and make sure he didn’t do anything. Harry Potter left his Felix Felicis for each of the members to take and it was because of this that they were able to survive the battle unscathed. Luna attended Albus Dumbledore’s funeral at the end of the year, alongside Neville Longbottom in Harry Potter.

At Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour’s wedding, Luna Lovegood shows up wearing bright yellow alongside her father and a sunflower in her hair. Even though Harry Potter has taken Polyjuice Potion and is transformed to look like a local boy from the village with red hair, Luna Lovegood immediately recognizes him. When he says that he isn’t Harry Potter, she asks if maybe he’s changed his name along with his appearance. It’s never explained how she can tell, but she’s the only character in all of the books who’s ever able to see beyond the Polyjuice Potion.

During the wedding, she and her father are dancing in a quirky fashion on the dance floor with their hands waving in the air. Viktor Krum asks Harry Potter about them and what they’re doing. Harry finds it difficult to explain their odd personalities as a family. Instead, he jokes that they are probably trying to get rid of wrackspurts, yet another fiction that the Lovegood family believes is real.

Following the wedding, Luna returns to Hogwarts for her 6th year even though Lord Voldemort takes over the ministry of magic. Along with Neville Longbottom and Ginny Weasley, Luna tries to restart Dumbledore’s Army and steal the Sword of Gryffindor from the headmaster’s office for Harry Potter, knowing that it was left to him by Albus Dumbledore. She caused so much trouble that year that she was taken by Death Eaters during the Christmas holiday and held captive in Malfoy Manor alongside Garrick Ollivander, the wandmaker. There, she was joined by Dean Thomas, Griphook the goblin, Hermione, Harry, and Ron. Luna helped Ron and Harry cut their ropes with a rusty nail that she and Ollivander had used. Ron aided the effort by using his deluminator to light the space, and Harry Potter used his mirror fragment to ask the bright blue eye on the other side for help. It was then that Dobby, the house elf came and freed them, taking Luna, Ollivander, and Dean to Shell Cottage where Fleur and Bill lived. This left Harry and Ron to save Hermione who Bellatrix Lestrange was torturing. Dobby the house elf came back after dropping off Luna and rescued the remaining trio, but died in the attempt.

Luna Lovegood remained at Shell Cottage until the final Battle of Hogwarts, during which time she was practicing the new wand that Ollivander had made for her and helped provide the eulogy for Dobby when he was buried.

Upon returning to Hogwarts in the Room of Requirement she made it known that the Lost diadem of Ravenclaw might be one of the Horcruxes in Harry Potter needed. She accompanies him to the Ravenclaw common room to show him what it looks like, at which point she stuns Alecto Carrow and joins the battle, fighting side by side against Death Eaters. She helped save Harry Potter at one point alongside Ernie MacMillan and Seamus Finnigan by casting patronuses to remove a group of Dementors that had made their way onto Hogwarts grounds. She fought with Ginny and Hermione against Bellatrix Lestrange near the end of the battle and watched Harry Potter defeat Lord Voldemort. Near the end of the books and her time at Hogwarts, Luna creates the diversion to allow Harry the opportunity to slip away with Hermione and Ron privately.

Luna Lovegood Quirky Possessions

Luna Lovegood Quirky Possessions

Luna Lovegood has silver dress robes and yellow dress robes, worn to weddings and Christmas parties. She wears a hare bracelet indicative of the Petronas she conjures. As mentioned, she’s also known for having a butterbeer cork necklace that she wears to keep away nargles. She also has dirigible plum earrings that she regularly wears despite comments made by other classmates like the Patel twins. She has beetle-wing earrings stolen by some of her classmates, although she believed that nargles took them. She also has Silver Star earrings, an eagle, and a lion hat.

Luna has fun patterned shoes stolen by her classmates and hidden, so she walks around barefoot in most of the Order of the Phoenix film. She also owns a pair of spectrespecs which are large and colorful, a freebie in the 1996 edition of The Quibbler and carries around regularly her Dumbledore’s Army which informs her when and where the Army is meeting at any given time.

Luna Lovegood After Hogwarts Years

Luna became a famous magizoologist after Hogwarts, discovering and classifying new species of magical animals, inspired no doubt by her father’s beliefs in so many mythical creatures. In fact, she spent most of her career trying to find the crumple-horned snorkack although she was never successful.

She married Rolf Scamander later in life, and wore a wedding dress full of Spangles and rainbows with a tiara crafted from Silver unicorn horns. In a daily Prophet column written by Rita Skeeter this dress was considered “the most hideous outfit of the year”. Together they had twin sons.

For the 2014 Quidditch World Cup, Luna and Rolf came together with other members of Dumbledore’s Army. She wore Flags on her dresses to represent all of the qualifying countries and sat in the VIP box with her fellow Dumbledore Army friends.

In 2019 Luna instructed members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force to perform the stamina charm that improved their casting. The members accompanied her in a search for Thunderbirds and bowtruckles to help them improve their focus when casting magical spells.

Luna Lovegood Family

Luna Lovegood married Rolf Scamander with whom she has two children: twin boys Lorcan and Lysander and they regularly hang out with Grandpa.

Luna Lovegood Magical Abilities and Special Skills

Luna Lovegood is a very powerful witch, just like her mother. At 14, she could conjure a corporeal Patronus, indicative of her superior magical skill. This skill was taught to her as a member of Dumbledore’s Army, where she learned how to cast offensive and defensive spells under Harry Potter’s instruction. This was during her fourth year, and her Patronus took the form of a hare. These skills were demonstrated during the battle of the Department of mysteries and the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, and the Battle of Hogwarts, all three of which took place against an army of Death Eaters.

She demonstrates her abilities as a competitive do list at the age of fifteen when she survives the Battle of the Department of Mysteries with few injuries, fewer than most of her compatriots. She has no significant injuries after the Battle of the Astronomy Tower. She, Ginny, and Hermione all battle Bellatrix Lestrange during the final Battle of Hogwarts, and she emerges without any injury.

She demonstrates her ability to use the revelio charm, the levitation charm, reducto curse, stunning spell, locking spell, and one lighting charm throughout her fourth year. She can also wordlessly stun in her 6th year, a testament to her NEWT level abilities.

She can read ancient runes upside down in a 1995 edition of The Quibbler, implying that she has studied the subject while at Hogwarts and can understand and translate runes, which even Hermione has difficulty with.

Her magical abilities and special skills are also demonstrated creatively, much like her mother when she makes a lion-shaped hat to wear to quidditch matches where she is supporting Gryffindor. By tapping it with her wand it makes realistic roars. She makes a similar hat with an eagle, and when tapped, the wings flap.

During Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger go to her house to ask her father about the Deathly Hallows, Harry Potter finds that she has painted the ceiling of her bedroom with beautiful and realistic portrayals of Neville Longbottom, Harry Potter, Ginny Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley weaving them together with a chain repeated thousands of times in gold ink with the word “friends”. Moreover, the rest of their house is covered in paintings of insects, flowers, and birds all over the walls, indicative of her creative skills and artistic abilities.

At 16, she and her friends revive Dumbledore’s Army while at Hogwarts, after Harry Potter is missing and searching for Hallows and Horcruxes. Her leadership is so efficient that the Death Eaters are forced to kidnap her between that and her father’s work for the resistance.

Luna Lovegood Wand

Luna Lovegood Wand

No information about the length, core material, or wood for Luna Lovegood’s first wand is known. She uses her first one throughout her experience at Hogwarts until the time she is kidnapped by Death Eaters and has her wand broken by said Death Eaters. Her father explained in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, “They took my Luna because of what I’ve been writing. They took my Luna and I don’t know where she is, what they’ve done to her. But they might give her back to me if I-If I help; I must save Luna. I cannot lose Luna. You must not leave.”

Garrick Ollivander makes her a new one in the spring of 1998 after they have both been rescued from Malfoy Manor. The length, core material, and wood for the second one also remains unknown.

Luna Lovegood Trivial and Fun Facts

JK Rowling noted that Luna Lovegood was meant to be the antithesis of Hermione, “She’s slightly out of step in many ways but she’s the anti-Hermione. Hermione’s so logical and inflexible in so many ways and Luna is likely to believe 10 impossible things before breakfast.”

Luna Lovegood is known for being a little quirky and sporadic, believing in the magical equivalent of Bigfoot and UFOs. She also has a knack for being painfully honest, completely cognizant of the fact that people make fun of her, don’t like her, and even steal her personal belongings to hide. And yet, she never displays any animosity or hurt over the actions of others, perfectly content in who she is.

Luna’s nickname of “Loony Lovegood” is not only related to the word ‘moon,’ the etymology of her first name but is short for ‘lunatic.’ Her last name represents her having good feelings for everyone.

Luna Lovegood was the last person in the Harry Potter books to commentate a quidditch match. During that time, she drew the audience’s attention to the environment and fun facts about different players while completely neglecting to give the game’s score. This responsibility fell to Professor McGonagall.

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Nymphadora Tonks saves Harry Potter from the Hogwarts Express after Draco Malfoy cursed him and hid him under his invisibility cloak. But in the movie adaptation, it’s Luna Lovegood. Luna, who is wearing her spectrespecs from the current Quibbler edition, says she can see the wrackspurts buzzing around his head, and that’s how she knew he was there even if he was invisible.

  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
  • Harry Potter: The Character Vault (a book about the films by Jody Revenson)

Luna Lovegood Appearances in Films

Luna Lovegood is portrayed by Evanna Lynch in the Harry Potter films. The actress is Irish so you might hear a hint of an Irish accent in the character. Her appearances in the films include:

  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

Luna Lovegood Quotes

“I suspect Nargles are behind it.”

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at Dobby’s burial”

“Thank you so much, Dobby, for rescuing me from that cellar. It’s so unfair that you had to die, when you were so good and brave. I’ll always remember what you did for us. I hope you’re happy now.”

After stunning Alecto Carrow with a non-verbal stunning spell during the Battle of Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: “I’ve never stunned anyone except in our DA lessons. That was noisier than I thought it would be.”

In Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, after much deliberation and postponing asking anyone, Harry Potter runs into Luna Lovegood in the hallway and asks her to join him at the Christmas party hosted by Professor Slughorn. He clarifies that they’re only going as friends so that she doesn’t get the wrong impression. Yet, her response is just as heartwrenching and painfully honest as ever:

Harry Potter: “So have you had a good term?”

Luna: “Oh, it’s been alright. A bit lonely without the D.A. Ginny’s been nice, though. She stopped two boys in our Transfiguration class calling me ‘Loony’ the other day —”

Harry Potter: “How would you like to come with me to Slughorn’s party tonight?”

Luna: “Slughorn’s party? With you?”

Harry Potter: “Yeah, We’re supposed to bring guests, so I thought you might like… I mean… I mean, just as friends, you know. But if you don’t want to…”

Luna: “Oh no, I’d love to go with you as friends! Nobody’s ever asked me to a party before, as a friend! Is that why you dyed your eyebrow, for the party? Should I dye mine too?”

On the Hogwarts Express after Romilda Vane tries to convince Harry not to sit with Luna and Neville in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire::

Luna: “People expect you to have cooler friends than us.”

Harry Potter: “You are cool. None of them were at the Ministry. They didn’t fight with me.”

Luna: “That’s a very nice thing to say.”

When Harry Potter offers to help Luna find the things her classmates have stolen from her in the film adaption of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix:

“I think I’ll just go down and have some pudding and wait for it all to turn up – it always does in the end.”

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Luna displays her neck for understanding people on a much deeper level than they expect:

“Come, daddy, Harry doesn’t want to talk to us right now. He’s just too polite to say it.”

At Fleur and Bill’s Wedding when Luna first sees Harry:

“Hello, Harry!” she said.

“Er — my name’s Barny,” said Harry, flummoxed.

“Oh, have you changed that too?” she asked brightly.

“How did you know — ?”

“Oh, just your expression,” she said.

Like her father, Luna was wearing bright yellow robes, which she had accessorized with a large sunflower in her hair. Once you got over the brightness of it all, the general effect was quite pleasant. At least there were no radishes dangling from her ears.”

During the Battle of Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:

Luna: “That’s right. That’s right, Harry … come on, think of something happy …”

Harry Potter: “Something happy?”

Luna: “We’re all still here, we’re still fighting. Come on, now …”

After the battle of Hogwarts when Luna demonstrates her knack for understanding people by creating a diversion for Harry Potter:

Luna: “I’d want some peace and quiet, if it were me.”

Harry Potter: “I’d love some.”

Luna: “I’ll distract them all. Use your cloak. Oooh, look, a Blibbering Humdinger!”

FAQs

Question: Does Luna Lovegood Ever get Her Stuff Back?

Answer: It is implied that all of the things her classmates steal and hide from her get returned at the end, usually right before everyone goes back on the Hogwarts Express.

Question: Is Luna Lovegood Religious?

Answer: Luna Lovegood is not religious, but she does believe in an afterlife. Out of all the odd eccentricities she displays, she believes in the archway through which the voices of the dead can be heard and believes that we are reunited with our loved ones when we die.

Question: Is Luna Lovegood Friends With Rowena Ravenclaw?

Answer: It is implied that Luna Lovegood is friends with the Grey Lady because when they need the final Ravenclaw item, she talks about the Lost diadem and how it could be found by simply talking to the Ravenclaw ghost. It is strongly implied that she has spoken with this ghost and is friendly with her, which would make sense given how her classmates make fun of her, isolate her, and steal her things.
