Hannah Abbott was a half-blood witch born into the Abbott family somewhere between September 1979 and August 1980. She began her journey at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was placed in Hufflepuff House. She was in the same school year as Harry Potter. (1)

I believe that Hannah was a naive, shy, and quiet girl who may have often been overshadowed by other students. I saw a lot of her vulnerability during a Herbology class, where she appeared to have a breakdown.

I think she may have lacked self-confidence as she often told herself she was not good enough and was “stupid” (2). She is quite a clumsy character who often makes mistakes, especially when under pressure. (3)

Despite her shyness and the fact she sometimes faded into the background, later in her school years, she found herself in the role of prefect. This is where I first noticed her confidence start to grow. She eventually became a member of Dumbledore’s Army, where she began to show her true colors and demonstrated her loyalty and bravery. (4)

We see Hannah’s life turned upside down when Death Eaters tragically murdered her parents; although she was pulled out of school at this time, she did later make an appearance again. In 1998 she took her place back in Dumbledore’s Army which I think showed great strength as a witch and a friend. (5)

I thought it was beautiful to see that Hannah eventually married her classmate, Neville Longbottom. She later became the landlady of the Leaky Cauldron, where the pair lived for some time as a happily married couple, this made for a peaceful ending after what had been a traumatic school life for the both of them. Hannah Abbott Birthplace

I don’t know much about Hannah Abbott’s place of birth, or even when her birthday was. But, I don’t believe that she is Irish British, and was born somewhere in Great Britain, possibly Ireland.

Hannah Abbott Parents and Childhood

I can’t say for sure precisely who Hannah’s parents are. But, I do know that although she claims to be a half-blood, she is actually a member of the pure-blood wizarding family, the Abbotts. This family was one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight. (7) We are to believe that her half-blood stature is because of an ancestor who must have been muggle-born. This means Hannah still has some Muggle heritage. (8)

Hannah Abbott Physical Traits

Hannah is described to us in the books as a pretty pink-face witch. She has a pale complexion and blonde hair. She often wore pigtails in her hair during her earlier years at Hogwarts. She had blue-green eyes. She was around 5’8 and had a slim to medium build.

Hannah Abbott Hogwarts Years

Hannah Abbott Hogwarts Years

Starting School

Hannah started her education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1991. The same year as Harry Potter. She was one of the first new students to be sorted into her house by the sorting hat. She was placed in Hufflepuff house. (9)

Year 2

During Hannahs’s second year at Hogwarts in 1992. The Chamber of Secrets had been reopened. This was causing havoc and fear throughout the school, almost resulting in the closure of Hogwarts and leaving a lot of parents fearing for their children’s safety.

Hannah was one of the students who accused Harry Potter of being the Heir of Slytherin after it came clear to everyone that he was a Parselmouth. She was convinced that he was the one who was attacking Muggle-born students in the school, including Hannahs’s classmate and friend Justin Finch-Fletchley.

When Hermione became a victim of the Basilisk, Hannah apologized to Harry. I think this was the point that she realized he can’t have been the one who had been harming her friends.

Hannah’s friend, Ernie, asked if Harry thought that Draco Malfoy was, in fact, the Heir of Slytherin, to which Harry said no. He was, of course, correct, and it was later made known that Tom Riddle was the one who had released the Basilisk from the Chamber of Secrets, using a magic diary to turn Ginny Weasley into his puppet.(10)

We saw Hannah at the End-of-Term Feast, where all of the students who had been petrified had been returned to normal and fully recovered.

Year 3

Hannah started her third year at Hogwarts in 1993, and news had got out that Sirius Black had escaped from Azkaban and everyone was in danger. Hannah believed the misconception that Sirius could transfigure himself into a flowering shrub to avoid being found. She told this story to all of her friends. (11) This rumor probably first came from Hannah’s love for Herbology and her teacher Professor Sprout.

Year 4

Hannah’s fourth year at Hogwarts started in 1994. This was going to be the year where the Triwizard Tournament took place, and spirits were high. Hannah’s fellow Hufflepuff, Cedric Diggory, was one of the selected finalists.

When Harry’s name flew out of the goblet of fire, Hannah was one of the many students who believed Harry had put his own name in for the tournament and thought he was trying to outshine Cedric.

Hufflepuff never received much acknowledgement, so everyone thought Harry was being a glory hog. I believe this is the reason why Hannah remained loyal, and continued to show support only to her fellow Hufflepuff. She wore a “Support Cedric Diggory – The Real Hogwarts Champion” T-shirt, and showcased a badge which said, “POTTER STINKS.” (12)

Hannah spent a lot of this year of school revising in the Great Hall with her friend Ernie Macmillan studying for their O.W.L exams, which took place the following year.

Later on in the year, during the Triwizard Tournament, we see Cedric Diggory tragically murdered at the hands of Lord Voldemort. I think that Hannah was so distraught by his death, that she completely overlooked the fact Harry Potter had famously won the tournament.

This was the first time that people, including Hannah, believed that Voldemort had returned and that war was coming.

Year 5

In 1995, Hannah was made prefect for Hufflepuff House, and so was her good friend Ernie. During the great feast, Dumbledore introduced Dolores Umbridge as the new Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher at the start of the year. It soon became apparent that Professor Umbridge was not willing to teach practical defense, which the student needed if Voldemort was forming an army. Therefore she decided to join Harry’s secret group, Dumbledore’s Army.(13)

With the pressure of her exams coming up, Hannah eventually broke down into tears during a herbology class, claiming that she was too stupid to take her exams. She was taken to the hospital wing and was treated with Calming Draught.

The treatment didn’t seem to do the trick, which became apparent when she turned a ferret into a flock of flamingos while doing her Transfiguration exam. (14)

Despite these hiccups, Hannah made it through the rest of her exams and towards the end of the year.

Hannah showed her loyalty to Dumbledore’s army by assisting Harry when he was attacked by Draco Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle at the end of the year. (15)

Year 6

In 1996, Hannah’s sixth year at Hogwarts began. Early in the year, during a Herbology class, she was informed that her mother had been murdered that day by death eaters. She was pulled out of school and didn’t return to Hogwarts for the rest of the year.

She wasn’t present at school when Dumbledore died at the hands of Snape. (16)

Year 7

Hannah returned to Hogwarts in 1997. Lord Voldemort had now taken over the Ministry of Magic, and it was now mandatory for all half-bloods and pure-bloods to attend Hogwarts. Muggle-born students had to go before a registration commission before being admitted.

It was never made clear whether Hannah had to resit her sixth year after missing it due to her mother’s demise.

Hannah was aboard the Hogwarts Express when the Death Eaters stormed the train looking for Harry Potter. She witnessed her fellow classmate Neville Longbottom confront them and tell them that Harry was not present on the train. (17)

Once the students were back at Hogwarts, Hannah became a member of Dumbledore’s Army, which was now being led by Neville, Luna Lovegood, and Ginny Weasley, while Harry, Ron, and Hermione were away from school searching for Horcruxes.

Once the army was reunited, they began training in defense, ready for battle. They caused havoc in the school, making life for the new Headmaster, Snape, very difficult. (18)

The Battle of Hogwarts

We do see Hannah present during the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998. She helped her classmates battle Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters. She was now in a group of students led by the Weasley twins. The group was eventually charged with defending the secret passages into Hogwarts. (19)

During the second part of the battle, after witnessing Harry’s presumably dead body, she was forced into the Great Hall with the rest of the students.

Hannah survived the Second Wizarding War. (20)

Hannah Abbott After Hogwarts Years

Hannah missed a year of education during her years at Hogwarts, so she would likely have to resit the same year, meaning she would have graduated with Hermione Granger in 1999.

Around 2014, Hannah married her former classmate Neville Longbottom in later life. She became the land lady of the Leaky Cauldron, where she and Neville lived together.

After a while, Hannah gave up being the pub’s landlady and decided to become a Healer and applied for the role of Matron at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Hannah Abbott Family [Spouse / Partner, Kids]

Although we didn’t see much of Hannah and Neville together throughout the books or on screen, their friendship likely evolved when they spent time together in Dumbledore’s Army. They both loved Herbology, which was Neville’s best subject, and they both attended the same class.

They also both had in common that their parents had been tortured and murdered by Death Eaters.

After the Second Wizarding War, Hannah and Neville got close and eventually married. Neville later became a Herbology Professor at Hogwarts while Hannah looked after their home at Leaky Cauldron.

It is unclear whether or not Hannah and Neville ever had any children.

Hannah Abbot Best Friend

Hannah Abbot Best Friends

Hannah’s best friend during her time at Hogwarts was Ernie Macmillian. The pair were close friends all the way through school.

They were both sorted into house Hufflepuff during their first year at Hogwarts.

They discussed that they both thought Harry Potter may have been the Heir of Slytherin during their second year after the Chamber of Secrets was opened, and Harry was discovered to be a Parcelmouth. Hannah had her doubts at first, as she had always liked Harry, but Ernie soon convinced her.

Hannah and Ernie both shared a hobby of collecting Chocolate Frog Cards. They also both supported their housemate Cedric in the Triwizard Championship.

In 1995 they both became the Hufflepuff prefects and then went on to join Dumbledore’s Army when they realized Harry was not, in fact, the Heir of Slytherin.

Unlike Hannah, Ernie was in the least bit worried or stressed about taking his O.W.L exams.

Hannah Abbot Magical Abilities and Special Skills

  • Healing – Hannah trained to become a healer in her adult life and applied for the role of Matron at Hogwarts. This shows that she must have been very well educated in healing and had a great deal of knowledge about healing spells, potions, and other remedies.
  • Dueling – Hannah helped to defend Harry when he was attacked by Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle when she managed to jinx and hex them into slugs. She also fought the Battle of Hogwarts, meaning she must have had excellent dueling skills and an understanding of Martial Magic.
  • Herbology – Hannah received a high grade in her Herbology O.W.L exam. During her sixth year, she attended N.E.W.T classes.
  • Charms – Hannah was more than capable of conjuring a non-corporeal Patronus, a mark of excellent magical ability. It is presumed that she learned how to cast this spell while learning defense from Harry P during her time in Dumbledore’s Army.
  • Defense Against the Dark Arts – When Hannah joined Dumbledore’s Army in 1995, she learned how to cast defensive spells with tutoring from Harry.

Hannah Abbott Wand

I don’t know the length, core, or wood from which Hannahs’s wand was made. Like most of the Witches and Wizards attending Hogwarts, I would presume that she would have purchased her wand from Ollivanders in Diagon Alley when she first started school in 1991.
