Harry Potter is no hidden gem. With a fanbase spanning the whole world, the series is widely recognized as one of the world’s most popular and successful novels and movie series.
Like many of us, I was introduced to the series via one of my childhood friends. Since that day, I have become a Potterhead who remembers all those enchanting spells and charms by heart.
Its enormous success is thanks to its iconic and exciting cast of characters. One such character is Draco Lucius Malfoy. Draco was a cunning but cowardly wizard, and he was a spoiled and arrogant child, a bully who was cruel towards others.
Although he later learned his lessons, he played the nemesis of Harry Potter for most of it. He was widely hated for his selfish and proud personality as a character.

Draco Malfoy’s Birthplace and Heritage
Draco was the sole child of Lucius Malfoy and Narcissa Malfoy, a pure-blood couple belonging to the Malfoy family. The Malfoys were one of the sacred Twenty-Eight families based in Great Britain. They were notorious for being extremely wealthy and equally low in character due to their highly discriminatory views.
Due to being born as the sole heir of a wealthy family, Draco had all the world’s luxuries at his fingertips. Furthermore, he was taught to be a firm believer in Pure-Blood supremacy from a very young age. Because of this, he always used to look down upon all the muggles and muggle-born throughout his school years.
Draco Malfoy’s Physical Appearance
Draco was a tall, handsome wizard with a fair complexion and whitish-blond hair, always jelled. His eyes were gray in color but had a cunning look. After becoming a Death Eater, he got a Dark Mark on his forearm, which later on transformed into a scar after the defeat of the Dark Lord.
Draco Malfoy’s Hogwarts Years
First Year
Draco started his Hogwarts journey in 1991 along with Harry Potter. The animosity between the two wizards began from the very start when they first met at Madam Malkin’s shop while buying robes for school.
They later met again at Hogwarts Express while going to Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Initially, Draco tried to act nice and friendly towards Harry; however, Harry refused after seeing his cunning nature and prejudiced self.
Sorting Hat placed him in the Slytherin House upon reaching Hogwarts, much to his delight. According to him, Gryfindor was the house for the less fortunate.
He even made fun of Harry for being placed in Gryffindor for not having parents. His closest friends at Hogwarts included Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. He also became the favorite student of their Potions teacher and Head of Slytherin House, Severus Snape.
Out of utter jealousy, he always tried to get Harry and his friends in trouble. Like at one time, he made Harry participate in midnight duels but secretly told Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch about this. However, his plan didn’t work as Harry managed to return to his room before Filch could catch him.
At another time, he realized that Harry, along with Hagrid and Hermione, were shifting Norbert, Hagrid’s dragon, out of the campus. He tried to outsmart them and complained to Professor McGonagall. Unfortunately for him, he was also given detention along with Hermionie and Harry for staying out after curfew.
During their detention, he and Harry witnessed Quirinus Quirrell, whose body was possessed by Lord Voldemort, drinking a unicorn’s blood in the Forbidden Forest. This terrified him, and he ran away. Slytherin House has been winning the House Cup every year since 1985. In 1991 also they had the maximum points.
But much to Draco’s utter disappointment, Dumbledore awarded extra points to Harry, Ron, Hermionie, and Neville. Thus, Gryfindorre emerged as the winner with the top score.
Second Year
At the beginning of the second year, he met harry at Flourish and Blotts along with his father, Lucius Malfoy. Draco was highly jealous when seeing Harry’s attention from the public, especially from Gilderoy Lockhart. he started to taunt harry, but Ginny came to Harry’s support.
Throughout the year, the rivalry between Harry and Draco became more and more bitter. Snape gave them special permission for practice in-ground when he got into Slytherin House Quidditch ditch, which was initially assigned to Gryffindor.
Later, when Ron questioned his team’s new Nimbus 2001, Draco taunted him that his family had the money to buy the entire team new Nimbus 2001s.
Upon hearing this, Hermione accused him of being on the team only because of his father’s favors. This made Draco furious, and he called her ‘mud-blood,’ a derogatory term used for Muggle-borns.
To defend his friend Ron casts a spell that causes one to vomit snails upon Draco. However, Ron’s wand was broken, and the spell backfired on him. this made Draco and his friends laugh at Ron while he was transported to Hagrid by Harry and Hermoine.
During the duel class, Professor Lockhart called Harry and Ron for the duel, but since Ron’s wand was broken, Snape called Draco instead. Despite explicit instruction to only use disarming spells, they began to use other spells such as Everte Statum and the Tickling spell.
Draco then cast the Snake Summon Spell to frighten Harry on Snape’s order. Though Lockhart tried to stop the snake but ended up making it angrier.
When Snape came forward to stop the snake from attacking Justin Finch-Fletchley, Harry started talking to the snake in Parseltongue. This made everyone believe that he was the Heir of Slytherin, responsible for opening the Chamber of Secrets.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione speculated Draco to be the heir because of his extreme hatred for muggles and muggle-borns. To get answers, they then used the PolyJuice Potion made by Hermuionie to transform themselves into Draco’s friends, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle.
They then went to Slytherin House’s standard room to meet Draco. However, Draco told them he was not the heir during the interrogation but would be glad to help the natural heir.
He even laughed that people considered Harry an heir with muggle friends like Hermione. Draco’s insults at Hermione made Harry and Ron angry, but they controlled their anger for their safety.
Third Year
Draco’s third-year journey began with news of Sirius Black, a convicted follower of Lord Voldemort, from the prison of Azkaban. On his way to school, Dementors entered the Hogwarts Express to find out about Sirius’s whereabouts.
Upon seeing the Dementors, Harry got so frightened that he fainted, which made Draco laugh at him. Furthermore, he told Harry that he knew how Sirius had betrayed his parents and was mainly responsible for their death.
That year, Hagrid was made the new teacher of Care of Magical Creatures at school. During the class, Draco provoked Buckbeak, a hippogriff who then injured him. Though unintentional, Draco took full advantage of this situation. He exaggerated his pain to fire Hagrid and postpone the Quidditch match of Slytherin against Gryffindor.
His father, Lucius, was a rich and influential man. Upon hearing about his son’s injury, he complained to the Ministry Of Magic that Buckbeak was a dangerous creature. It has to be executed for the safety of the students.
His plan succeeded, and the Ministry gave Buckbeak a death sentence. Due to this sentence, Hagrid was really sad. But when Draco saw his tears, he made fun of him.
Hermione being a true friend of Hagrid was infuriated with Draco’s behavior and almost attacked him in anger. Draco being a coward himself, got really scared but fortunately for him, Harry and Ron stopped Hermornie on time and told her that ‘Draco is not worth it.’
However, she did punch him in the face, which she later said felt good. In the end, Harry and Hermione managed to save both Sirius and Buckbeak, much to Draco and Lucius’s disappointment.
Fourth Year
Before the school year, Draco went to see the Quidditch World Cup with his family. After the match, the Death Eaters entered the stadium and began terrorizing the muggles and muggle-borns. This made Draco mock Hermione about her blood status.
That year when Hogwarts hosted The Triwizard Tournament, Harry was chosen as a champion from Hogwarts along with Cedric Diggory, much to everyone’s surprise.
Draco, out of jealousy, started his own campaign to humiliate Harry by supporting Cedric. He wore a badge that said support Cedric Diggory and on pressing it, the sentence changed to ‘Potter Stinks.’
He even tried to cast a spell behind his back to humiliate Harry further. However, Professor Moody, who was actually Barty Crouch Jr in disguise, caught him. To punish him, Moody transformed him into a ferret and cast a spell to swing him up and down. Furthermore, he threw Draco into his friend Gabby’s pants to cause Draco more humiliation.
Fortunately for him, Professor McGonagall came to his rescue and stopped Moody. She then transformed him back to his human self. When Draco threatened to inform his father about this incident, Moody got angrier and went after him to punish him further. However, Draco ran away, much to the students’ amusement.
He also informed Daily Prophet reporter Rita Seeker to write false articles about Harry and Hermione. This made Harry lose his credibility. Nobody except Hermione and Dumbolode believed him when he claimed that Voldemort had returned.
Fifth Year
Throughout the year, the rivalry between Harry continued to intensify. Furthermore, he kept on insulting Harry every now and then. For example, When he was appointed as the perfect for Slytherin House, he mocked Harry for not being the Gryffindor’s Perfect.
At another time, when Gryffindor won the Quidditch match against Slytherin, Draco began to insult Harry and Weasley brothers. This angered them so much that they attacked him, resulting in their repulsion from the team.
That year, Dolores Umbridge was appointed as the new Defense Against Dark Arts teacher. Umbridge was not an evil and cunning teacher but was highly biased towards Slytherin House, much to Draco’s pleasure. She formed the Inquisitorial Squad, a team that was in support of the Ministry of Magic.
She chose only Slytherin students, including Draco, to become the members. As a member of the Squad, Draco was given some powers which he didn’t shy away from misusing against the class fellows that he didn’t like.
He deduced ten points from Hermione for disliking Umbridge and for being a muggle-born. He also deducted five points from Harry simply because he didn’t like him. Similarly, he removed points from other students for petty reasons.
Along with other Squad members, he also found out about the Dumbledore Army, which led to Dumbledore’s dismissal as the headmaster.
He also caught Harry and other members of Dumbledore’s Army when they were searching for Sirius Black. He brought them to the new Headmistress, Umbridge’s office. As a reward, Umbridge gave Slytherin an extra fifty points.
Umbridge then tries to punish Harry, but Hermione lies that there was a secret weapon in the Forbidden Forest. Though Umbridge did not allow Draco to accompany her, she ordered him to watch other D.A. members.
At the same time, she, Harry, and Hermione went to get the weapon. After they left, the other D.A. members fought bravely with Draco and his allies. Ginny Weasley performed Bat Bogey Hex which hit Draco. The D. A. members freed themselves and left the office.
After the Death Eaters lost the Battle Of the Department Of Mysteries, many got captured, including Draco’s father, Lucius Malfoy. Draco was infuriated with this news and wanted to get revenge on Harry, whom he thought was mainly responsible for his father’s downfall.
He, along with his friends, even attacked harry, but D.A. members came to Harry’s rescue, and Draco’s plan failed with him transforming into A slug-like thing.
Sixth Year
After the defeat of Lucius Malfoy in the Battle of Department Of Mysteries, Voldemort made Draco take his father’s place as a Death Eater. This made his mother Narcissa really worried because he was just a young boy and still was assigned the difficult job of killing Albus Dumbledore.
Her maternal love for Draco took her to Snape’s house to ask for his help, along with Bellatrix. Snape promised to not only help Draco in his Mission but also kill Dumbledore if Draco failed to do it.
Draco was really excited to become a Death Eater at such a young age. He even bragged about it to his friends on his way to Hogwarts. He noticed Harry spying on him during this conversation, wearing the Invisibility Cloak.
Harry had his suspensions about Draco being the Death Eater. So, to find out the truth, he went to Draco’s Compartment. However, Draco found out on time and decided to teach him a lesson and take his father’s revenge.
When the train reached Hogwarts, he asked his friends to leave, and he then shut all the doors and windows. Furthermore, he cast a spell to petrify Harry and stumped his foot on Harry’s face, breaking Harry’s nose.
Throughout the year, he worked hard to make his Mission successful. He planned to repair the broken Vanishing Cabinet so that he could transport the Death Eaters into Hogwarts.
Furthermore, he went to Borgin and Burkes, an antique shop. He threatened Mr. Borgins to repair the Vanishing Cabinet and keep it safe. He also learned Occlumency from Bellatrix and practiced several spells to help him in his Mission.
As his training went on, he became more and more insecure about himself and fearful of losing. He began to distance himself from his friends. His health deteriorated, and once, he even had a mental breakdown in Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom.
However, Harry found him there and informed him that he knew what Draco did. The two wizards got into a duel which ended up severely injuring Draco. Fortunately, Snape came on time and saved his life.
He made several attempts to kill Dumbledore but failed every time. During the Battle of Astronomy Tower, he successfully got the Death Eaters in the camps. He then cornered Dumbledore in the tower and attempted to kill him.
When Dumbledore tried to stop him, Draco told him that he didn’t have a choice, and Voldemort would kill him and his family if he didn’t kill Dumbledore. Seeing his vulnerable state, Dumbledore tried to soothe him. Draco lowered his wand because he realized that he could not kill anybody.
However, Snape arrived and killed Dumbledore, fulfilling his promise to Narcissa. He then took Draco away to a safe place. After this incident, Draco had to leave Hogwarts permanently because he had been exposed as a Death Eater.
Seventh Year
Though the Malfoys were not happy, they still had to support Voldemort in fear for their life. It was pretty clear that Draco and his family were sick of everything, and they just wanted a way out. However, they knew that Voldemort would kill them if they refused his support. Voldemort had made their Manor his new Headquarters and would disrespect them repeatedly.
Draco even had to watch his Muggle Studies teacher Charity Burbage die at the hands of Voldemort and be eaten by Nagini. Upon seeing this horrific event, he became so frightened that he passed out.
Draco was asked to identify Harry and his allies during the Skirmish At the Malfoy Manor. Though they were quite recognizable, still Draco said that he could not say for sure if they were indeed them. Later at Hogwarts, He, along with Crabbe and Goyle, followed Harry, Hermione, and Ron to the Room of Requirement, and a fight started between them.
Draco, no longer in control of his friend as he was in previous years, could not stop Crabbe from starting the FiendFyre. He even informed him that Voldemort wanted Harry alive, but Crabbe didn’t listen. Soon the entire room broke into the fire. Draco tried to save his friends but could only manage to rescue Goyle.
However, Harry and his allies soon found Draco pleading to the Death Eater to spare him as he was always on Death Eater’s side. Seeing this, Ron even punched him for being a disloyal person despite them saving Draco twice during the night.
When Hagrid was captured and tortured by Voldemort, Harry had to surrender in front of Voldemort to save his friend Hagrid’s life. Voldemort then cast a Killing spell on him and asked Narcissa to verify if Harry was indeed dead.
Narcissa was really worried for Draco’s safety, who was at Hogwarts. Thus, she lied about Harry’s death so that when Voldemort would take them all to Hogwarts to announce Harry’s death, she would search for Draco. In the end, Lucius and Narcissa took their son, Draco, and left for their own safety.
Life After Hogwarts
Since Draco and his family left Voldemort’s side at the end of The Battle Of Hogwarts, they were spared from imprisonment. Over time, his loving, soft and vulnerable nature became evident. Draco’s view about pure-blood supremacy also changed over time, becoming more lenient and tolerant.
He even married a pure-blood witch Astoria Greengrass, who was also relatively passive towards the pure-blood ideology because of her past bad experiences. When he fell in love with Astoria, he stood by her when his family went against her.
The couple had a son Scorpius Malfoy who then joined Hogwarts in 2017 and became best friends with Albus Potter, Harry Potter’s son. With his past experiences, he became much more tolerant towards pure-blood and raised his son, Scorpius, with love and away from such prejudiced ideologies.
